Rules overview

Some rules are predetermined by law, others are made by the casino itself. In the game of blackjack, the player encounters many variations which affect the chances of winning by affecting the house advantage. It is possible that all rules are not posted, so the player has to ask beforehand about them. Around 100 variations may exist in the game play. The casino at blackjack has a house advantage, similar to any other game. As long as the blackjack players use the basic strategy, the best available, the house advantage of the casino is less than 1%. This is in huge favor to the player as compared to any other card games available in the casino.
Each casino puts up a rule whether the dealer hits a soft 17 or not. The “Hit soft 17” game is less favorable to the player, as it makes the house advantage about 0.2% higher.
As all the things are equal, less number of decks is more favorable for the player. The number of decks used also plays a major role in the chances of winning.
Some casinos also offer an option of surrender which allows the player to give up his bet and hence not play the hand. This variation still exists in certain countries.
The resplit option is also present in many casinos. Some casinos allow unlimited splitting of cards other than aces. If the player splits cards other than the pairs of aces and a 3rd card of that value appears, the player can re split by betting the same amount as the original bet.

Dealing the deck

Published at 30. 11. 2008 in category Main

The cards in the game are dealt in two ways, either from a box containing 4 to 8 decks called a shoe or from 2 hand held decks. When dealing by hand, the two initial cards of the player are face down, while the dealer has one face up card and one face down card. It does not matter to the player that is cards are face up or down as the rules of the game are predetermined. If the player has a score less than 17, she has to hit.  When dealing from the shoe, all player cards are face up, except for some modifications. If she has 17 or more than that, she must stand, that is take no more cards unless it is a soft 17 where the dealer has to follow the casino rules on the table. The highest possible hand is a natural or blackjack, which means that the initial total of the cards is 21(that is an ace and a card of value 10). A player with a black jack is an automatic winner, unless the dealer also has a blackjack, which is a case of a tie or a push. When the upcard of the dealer is an ace, the player is allowed to make a side bet which is called insurance to guard against the risk of the dealer having a blackjack.  The payoff is mostly 1:1; this means that the player wins the same amount that he had originally betted. The minimum and the maximum bets are posted on the table itself. There are some single deck games available which pay only a ratio of 6:5 for a blackjack.

Reach the 21 points!

Published at 21. 10. 2008 in category Main

The objective of the game is to get a higher card than the total of the dealer, but that too without getting over a total of 21 which is referred to as Busting or too many. Each player has to play his hand independently against the dealer. In the casino version of Blackjack, the dealer is faced with players varying from one to seven from behind a table which is in the shape of a kidney. When the round begins, each player places his or her bet in the box known as the “Betting box”. After placing the bet, he receives two cards initially.  The spot cards score from 1 to 9, the king, queen, jack and the 10s count as a total of 10. The ace can be either one or eleven. The player starts the game and plays his hand after taking the additional cards if he desires but it is totally up to him.  After this, the dealer plays his hand. If he busts, he loses the game. If he also busts, he loses to all the players playing black jack. If neither of them busts, the player with high end score cards wins. In case of a tie, no one wins, the hand is called a push. It is also possible for the dealer to lose to some players on the table and also beat the other players in the same round.

Pontoon

Published at 16. 9. 2008 in category Main

Also known as Twenty one or Pontoon, it is played most widely in the casinos throughout the world. Blackjack is a very interesting card game which is played almost everywhere. Playing this game requires skill as well as publicity surrounding card counting which involves calculating the probability of the advantage which is based on the ratio of higher to lower cards.
The first origin of the game was found in the book of the gambler Miguel de Cervantes. The book was called Don Quixote. This book is about a couple of cheaters who were working in the city of Seville. They were proficient in cheating at Vientiuna or twenty one for Spanish. It stated that the main objective of the game was to reach a score of 21 points without busting.  When introduced in the United States, Black jack was not a very popular game. The later references of this game were found in Spain and France. So the gambling house had to offer various bonuses for the players to remain seated on the table and play the game. One of such bonuses that were offered was a 10-1 payout to the player who got the ace of spades with a blackjack that is jack of clubs or jack of spades. This hand itself was called a Black jack, and the name stuck to the game even after the bonus was eliminated. With the current developments in the game, it may not contain a jack or even any black cards at all.
